Wherein the Expedition Reaches Sietch Altayih, Finn Receives a Bride, and the Warband Presses on to Kelmarane …

  • From the oasis where they encountered the Enemy’s scouts, the expedition quickly presses on out of concern that more will arrive soon. Worried that they might be pursued, Rashid opts for a long, circuitous route to their destination, resulting in many extra days on the road.
  • Upon arrival at Sietch Altayih, the Company are greeted by the father of Rashid and Ammerah, Sheikh Al’Dafar ibn Al’Hadir, who is beyond grateful to see his children returned with the help they sought out while simultaneously saddened that his youngest son, Sa’id, did not survive. He declares that a feast must be held in the honor of the newcomers before taking Rashid aside to question him. The warband are escorted to baths – Lan-Fan is taken away with the women – which they gratefully accept.
  • Arn and Finn are also singled out by Janek Kaalem el-Zaidi, the Fa’iel’s wiseman who is a spellcaster himself, albeit one who is not as powerful as either of them, who is eager to talk with them about the entire situation. They learn that scouts have been sent to the gnoll-occupied village of Kelmarane to seek out the other half of a map that will lead the Janek (for that is a title, not a name as Finn discovers) to a long-lost djinn city known as Yaqut min Alraml that is the focus of this hunt.
  • As dusk settles and the Company assemble for the feast, Zistral decides that he would rather be outside, scouting, since the sietch is mostly underground which he finds uncomfortable.
  • Sheikh Al’Dafar throws a good feast but, in the middle of it, makes an offer of his ‘family’s water’ to ‘Lord’ Finn via his daughters. Realizing very quickly what this is but not sure how to get out of this without causing an incident, Finn accepts the water from Ammerah, which effectively betroths them. The other members of his warband do not immediately understand what has happened since they do not speak Arabic, but quickly figure it out.
  • Outside, Zistral is patrolling and encounters a wounded scout who passes out soon after. Carrying the scout back to the sietch, he will learn that this man is one of those who went to Kelmarane. Finn does some magical healing on the man to ensure that he will survive.
  • From Rashid, Finn also learns that a ‘cleansing’ ceremony is required before consummation of any marriage – this will last a week and a day – but the discovery of the scout throws this into flux as Finn decides to take his warband to Kelmarane to finish the task. It will take some days to reach the village.
  • Some miles from Kelmarane, the warband discover an old and mostly ruined mosque that will work very well as a base of operations. Lan-Feng and Thorn are sent forward to recon but quickly discover that pugwampis inhabit it. Despite their reticence to deal with these gremlin-like characters, the warband recognize that this mosque is ideally located.
  • So they grimace and get to work…

Wherein the Expedition Enters the Djinn Lands and the Enemy’s Scouts Are Encountered…

  • Having dealt with the irritating gremlin-like creatures, the expedition spends a few days replenishing their supplies before officially embarking. They now travel during the night to avoid the too hot days.
  • During the many days trip, the company get to know the Fa’iel better, with Finn continuing to alternating his time with Rashid ibn Al’Dafar and the man’s sister, Ammerah who is teaching him their language so he does not always have to create a weave for it; it is clear to any with eyes that Finn finds the lady extremely attractive. Thorn is quickly drawn into gambling with Rashid and his men, and somehow manages to win more than he loses. Brum spins tales of dwarven hijinks while Arn reads, Lan-Fan tries to avoid Rashid’s less than subtle attempts to woo her and Zistral learns the ways of the desert.
  • Some days beyond the starting point, the expedition pauses at a buried cistern that Arn recognizes from his dream. He senses sinister eyes – Lady Ammerah appears to sense them as well – and a distant scout is detected. Rashid urges prompt action – they cannot let this scout report to his master! – and Finn directs the company to move with aggression and haste.
  • As it turns out, there are two scouts, though one is concealed, and both end up unleashing bottled sand elementals upon the company. The fight is fierce, though it quickly goes against the Enemy once Arn hurls a ball of fire at one of the sand creatures and turns it to glass.
  • Afterward, the company discover that the scouts appear to have committed suicide via small glass vials rather than be captured, a sure sign of their fanaticism. They also bear glass spheres that Rashid identifies as a source of the Enemy’s scrying. Even though they are destroyed, he urges them to press on quickly – the Enemy may be upon them at any moment…
  • Hours later, long after the expedition has moved on, a trio of centaurs arrive via magic to investigate. One is a mage, the others are warriors, and they take up the hunt…

Dramatis Personæ

Wherein a Dream is Had, a Duel is Won and Vile Gremlins Are Slain…

  • Arn Dreams of the desert. He is alone, dying of thirst and generally being killed by the sun. During this dream, he is stung by a sand scorpion and then, delirious, finds an dry cistern. A shadowy figure appears and offers assistance … which Arn accepts. The cistern is suddenly full of water which is bitter and cold. He wakes … and can still taste the bitterness of the water.
  • Meanwhile, as the rest of the warband departs Defiant, Zistral heads north, seeking out his tribe to inform them that the Spear of the Hunter has been found. He is disappointed to discover that the truly important leaders are absent, but passes on information regarding where he is heading before departing to rejoin the warband..
  • Leaving behind both Haruki and Yusuf at Sir Malfoy’s request, Finn and the rest of the warband depart Defiant and begin heading south, accompanied by Rashid ibn Al’Dafar and his lovely sister, Ammerah el’Iyana bint Al’Dafar, as well as a handful of Fa’iel.
  • Many days out of Defiant, the warband encounter a large gathering of centaurs waiting alongside the River Kashk. These are many tribes, including Zistral’s, gathered here to judge whether the the Spear of the Hunter has truly been found. Zistral must undertake three Trials – one of endurance, one of wisdom, and one of strength. He will be opposed by the chief warrior of his tribe, a complete jerk by the name of Gilthorax, who insists that Zistral is unworthy.
  • The first Trial is a race to get a message to a distant location and back; Zistral easily wins this race, much to his foe’s irritation. The second Trial is a question regarding who to warn first in the face of a terrible threat, a village of hunters or a village of warriors; his foe opts for the warriors, choosing to sacrifice the hunters, while Zistral choses the hunters first who he will then lead to join with the warriors. Zistral is determined to be the victor in this as well. Finally, the third Trial is a duel between the two and Zistral so easily defeats his foe that it is almost embarrassing. He is declared the First Scout.
  • Setting out the following morning, the warband presses on, finally reaching the Fa’iel encampment some days later. Rashid is alarmed to discover it in chaos, with men attempting to recapture panicked animals or attempting to put out a fire. Finn quickly issues orders – Zistral to aid the recapture, Arn to help with the fire, everyone else with him. He then assists Ammerah with the injured, utilizing his weaving to save one from the brink of death much to her visible awe. The rest of the warband stand ready in the event that this is an ambush.
  • Afterward, the warband learns that this is due to the unluck aura of some local creatures known as pugwampi that are gremlin-like creatures. One evidently snatched a goat and, in the process, caused this mess.
  • Eventually, the warband opts to seek out these creatures due to a persistent and irritating noise in the distance – this leads to a comedy of errors as they trip and stumble and cause accidental brushfires, but the pugwampi themselves are not particularly impressive physically. The goat is rescued and the nasty gremlin things are slain.

Wherein a New Adventure Beckons…

A month has passed since the orcish attack on Castle Defiant was repulsed.

The response to Finn Sardock’s request for aid from Caithness was (relatively) prompt: lumber, laborers, and additional soldiers have arrived via a Gate, one presumably created by his and Arn’s former master, Gestlin. To Finn’s dismay, no additional instructions from Lord Kerin or his heir, leaving young Master Sardock in an ever increasing role of responsibility as regent for the absent lord.

To Haruki’s great surprise, his elder sister, whom he thought slain, accompanied the reinforcements, bringing with her surprising tales of her survival. She is surprised (and probably a little suspicious) that her brother has accept Finn as his new daimyō, especially when it seems that Sardock does not understand what this means.

Reconstruction continues, with many of the damaged buildings of the surrounding village and the stonework upon Defiant being restored to functionality. During this short period, a dwarven warrior who names himself Brumrumli Barrelfoot has joined the company, quickly proving himself to be a more than capable warrior. Morale among the people of Defiant has cautiously grown.

  • Some days earlier, a patrol with Arn, Lan-Fan and Thorn encountered a small orcish scouting party that seemed to be part of a much larger band. With this in mind, Finn leads a larger patrol with them, Brum and Zistral to seek out this band.
  • They eventually locate the orcs who are already engaged in a pitched battle with unfamiliar humanoid figures. Aiding the orcs is a giant that many of the warband recognize from the assault upon Defiant and a second group of orcs are moving to reinforce the first. Finn issues quick commands, complimented by Brum’s tactical expertise, and the warband rushes forward.
  • Their arrival catches the orcs by surprise and the warband shamelessly abuse this with Arn first hurling an explosive fireball at the leader of the orcish reinforcements while Zistral charges the giant. A fierce battle quickly ensues but it goes very poorly for the greenskins and their giant companion.
  • In the aftermath of the battle, the warband take stock of those they have just assisted. These are clearly desert people and they have many casualties, including a spellcaster of some sort who killed himself to cast a spell. The sole woman present (who bears enough resemblance to the dead man to hint at a familial relationship) is the only one present who speaks any Anglish and even then, just barely; she and the other survivors react strangely when Finn offers her water – his intent is to weave a language borrowing spell so he can converse properly, but withdraws this at their reaction. She does identify herself as Ammerah el’Iyana bint Al’Dafar, and Finn, who has a weakness for ‘dusky beauties’ is quite entranced.
  • After much gesturing and halting explanations, the warband learn that these people – they call themselves Fa’iel – are seeking out the master of Defiant, which Finn grudgingly acknowledges to be him (for the time being.) They need assistance to free themselves from the tyranny of their master and were actively seeking out ‘One’ and ‘Two’ of Three casters, with Finn being among these and Arn another – they actually have a scroll with the latter’s image! The Third was meant to be her slain brother…
  • Ammerah’s other brother, Rashid ibn Al’Dafar, fell during the battle but was not slain and, with the warband’s assistance, is restored to consciousness, at which point he takes over the conversation, using his sister as a translator. In gratitude for Zistral’s heroic charge against the giant which saved many of the Fa’iel from being slain, he presents (through Finn which everyone presumes to be a cultural thing) a spear the centaur recognizes as an ancient weapon of legend for his people. Rashid then notices Lan-Fan and is almost immediately entranced by the tiny but fierce young woman.
  • Finn readily agrees to assist them, impressing Brum in the process, and the warband escort the wounded back to Defiant where they can further hash out the specifics and welcome the Fa’iel more properly. Once there, Yusuf is pressed into service as a translator – although Finn utilizes a weave to borrow the former gladiator’s Arabic language.
  • After discussing briefly with Ser Malfoy, Finn agrees to lead his warband to meet with the Fa’iel leader to discuss this matter further principally out of hopes of forming an alliance with them against the orcs. Zistral, now with the weapon of legend for his people, announces he must tell the other centaurs that it has been found and will rejoin them later

Player Notes:

  • CommJunkee took over as GM for this adventure arc, which resulted in Ronnke needing a character hence Brum the dwarf. Loki also brought in Lan-Fan, who is Haruki’s older (but much, much smaller) sister. Mel opted to continue her hiatus.

Letter of the Law, Part Four

  • On Mora, the Holiday List Gala is abruptly interrupted by an attack by Ine Givar terrorists utilizing paralyzation gas to incapacitate the assembled the nobility. Sir Korbin manages to get Buck, Haank and Sae clear of the gas before succumbing to it. Sae breaks from the other two, intent on meeting up with Armin.
  • Armin is hiding out in the kitchen when the attack begins. She moves to investigate, then retreats upon observing that all of the combat bots appear to have been hacked. She heads toward the pre-designated rally point.
  • Eddy also is apart from the crew when the things go south and moves to investigate; like Armin, though, he retreats before the numerous bots. He observes (briefly) a woman he mistakes for Armin, then promptly encounters the actual Armin on the way to the rally point.
  • High above the massive hotel, J-Aris has located the Ine Givar drone that is acting as the data platform. He nestles in and begins hacking it.
  • Buck and Haank overhear a gun battle, then discover that it was Ine Givar fighting with one another. Among the corpses, they discover one who appears to be infected by the protomoss they encountered in the strange Otherplace on the other side of Corfu back in episode 3.12. Elsewhere, Eddy also sees similar soldiers before he and Armin link back up.
  • Eventually, the entire team link together just as J-Aris manages to defeat the sys-admin trying to prevent him. He kills the jamming, takes a couple of missiles against the hull of large drone, then shoots his consciousness down into a combat android. The team launch a plan to rescue Spiirs with Armin and Sae to draw fire. Unknown to everyone else, J-Aris is pushing a reset patch to the bots. On all drone feeds, the crew are observed heroically moving into action just as the bots turn on the terrorists with their stun weapons.
  • Once the situation is again under control and casualties are evacuated, Archduke Norris raises Sir Korbin to Baronet of Regina in gratitude for his retainers’ actions.
  • Several weeks pass following this event during which Spiirs officially buys out Ella who officially rejoins the Rhylanor Colonial Navy.
  • Sae is a partial witness to the murder of his former commanding officer, Edvard Leskinen but not before Leskinen manages to get some very dangerous information into Sae’s hands. This information calls into question the validity of the archduke’s identity which Sae knows is worth killing for…

GM Notes:

  • And that’s the season. I wasn’t quite as happy with this session as I would like – too much “telling” on my part and not enough letting the PCs driving. I had an alternate stopping point in mind and in retrospect, I should have gone with it instead because it would have been a lot more interesting and would have had a great WTF?!

Letter of the Law, Part Three

  • On Mora, in the wake of the shooting, Valerie Vaskor is rushed to the emergency room with Ibrahim while the crew remaining behind are interrogated by security and police. Eventually, however Korbin Spiirs arrives, accompanied by Envoy Dannica who is in pursuit of Breyon Sodhii. Upon learning that Buck saw him, she leaves immediately, intent on following.
  • Released by law enforcement, the crew re-assembled with Armin, J-Aris and Sae where they discuss the mess. Afterward, Korbin asks for the crew to accompany him to the Holiday Gala List as his entourage since, traditionally, nobles attending these galas are expecting to come with retainers.
  • The crew spend a day getting prepped – Buck and Sae must get replacement clothes while Haank coordinates with everyone else to setup a bodyguard rotation for Korbin. During the day, he and Buck receives a time-delayed message from Kendal Easting who reveals that he’s joined Tukera Lines because he is uncomfortable serving with a psion.
  • The day of the Gala arrives and the crew arrive with Sir Korbin at the Grand Concourse where they discover security heavily utilizes ‘bots and drones. With the nobility of the Spinward Marches assembling, the crew rotate through their protection detail with those not keeping an eye on Sir Korbin able to mingle and network.
  • Armin is frequently mistaken for someone else who is obviously highborn, so she hides out to avoid it while Buck sees a woman he knows from his past a pirate and sort of learns that she’s grifting. Eddy flirts with the countess of Natoko but then finds himself forced into a duel with her husband; despite his intent otherwise, Eddy kills Lord Natoko and attempts to depart the Gala is disgust and self-loathing. During this duel, Sae sees his former commanding officer conducting a covert hand-off. J-Aris counters a hacking attempt and then tracks down the origin. Haank interacts very briefly with Commander Angela Krin, then observes Sir Korbin speaking to a nobleman who is planning a pilgrimage to a far distant world called Cathedral in the Fessor sub-sector.
  • Hours after the Gala begins, Archduke Norris finally starts the official naming of nobles and begins with something completely unexpected: his kinsman, Countess Josephine of Efate, has been officially elevated to the position of Duchess of Regina by the emperor. This visibly enrages the Duchess of Mora for reasons that the crew are initially ignorant of (though they can observe from how the various nobility react that this is going to cause problems.)
  • Once the official part of the ceremony has ended, the archduke declares that the celebration proper must begin. Fireworks explode overhead … but suddenly, there is a massive electromagnetic surge that blows out the power. Darkness descends which causes surprise…
  • And then, armed terrorists drop out of the sky and begin shooting…

    GM Notes:

  • It stands to reason: I was so disappointed with the previous session that this one turned out to be something of a success. Eddy’s dueling misadventure went over especially well.

Letter of the Law, Part Two

  • On Mora, in the wake of his disastrous interview with local media, Eddy is contacted by Corbin Spiirs who points out that the interview has the hallmarks of a well-organized smear campaign. Eddy agrees to look into it while Spiirs reaches out to some of his contacts within the Rhylanor court. Unfortunately for Eddy, he is most definitely not an effective investigator and is easily distracted which results in him not learning a great deal.
  • On the second day of Adric Mason’s trial, Buck, Haank and Sae are called to testify; only after they are released from the witness booth do they realize that the defense attorney likely managed (with his carefully phrased questions) to minimize the efficacy of their testimony. They are released from the trial but instructed to stay in Wavecrest City in the event that they are called back to the witness booth..
  • Outside the temple, the crew encounter Kaylii Patterson whom they met on Pirema some years back. She’s grown up somewhat since then and sort of followed Haank’s example as she’s now in a ‘hitchhiking’ phase. Though he does not say anything just yet, Haank already begins making plans to potentially recruit her to the crew.
  • Buck, Haank and Sae accept an invitation to brunch from Lord Mika who admits to them that he is actively seeking a crew for the Miss Adventure and was contemplating offering the position to them … but the fact they employ a register psion has left him concerned. Both Buck and Haank defend the absent Ibrahim and Haank admits that they have not made a firm determination regarding how Spinward Star, LLC., moves forward now that Sam has returned, but that they will consider the lord’s offer, especially when it is revealed that Lord Mika is putting together an expedition to long distant Bael for lanthanum.
  • Having grown increasingly convinced that Mason is going to skate, Sae discreetly reaches out to the black market to purchase a gauss pistol he intends to use against the serial killer. As far as he is concerned, Adric Mason will not get off Mora alive.
  • On the third day, the ‘Voice of Maar Zon’ announces judgement: Not Guilty. Everyone is surprised by this (including both lawyers) but Mason’s attorney quickly perks up at the thought of the countersuits they intend to file. Outside, as he and Mason begin giving their post-trial statements to the press, one of the journalists steps closer … and shoots the acquitted serial killer in the face! The shooter is revealed to be none other than Valerie Vaskor. After ensuring that Mason is dead, she turns the weapon on herself…

GM Notes:

  • Loki was out this session
  • Ugh, this was a mess on so many levels that I don’t know where to even begin. In fact, I’m probably not going to say much about this – the less I think about it, the better. Move forward and start concentrating on the next session. Need to ensure that my run ends on a high note, not a “blech” note like this.

Letter of the Law, Part One

  • From Porozlo, the crew depart in the Miss Adventure, bound for Mora. It is a 4-Jump trip, so twenty-eight days pass
  • Upon arrival at the very, very busy Mora, they are boarded by customs personnel who conduct a fairly lengthy review of their identification and the like. Ibrahim is noted as a registered psion (which certainly causes Corbin Spiirs and Lord Mika to raise eyebrows.
  • On Marchkeep Station, the Mora high port, the crew reunite with Sam and his crew who he reveals were mind-wiped by the now defunct Monsaanti-Neogene. Feeling guilty and responsible for these basically blanked out ‘kids,’ Same essentially adopted Echo, Sierra, Victor and Whiskey.
  • The following morning, Buck, Ella, Haank, Ibrahim Sam and Sae meet with the prosecution lawyer who is trying to ensure that Adric Mason gets the death penalty where they learn that the serial killer has successfully gotten a change of venue to a church of Maar Zon (which is an old Sylean religion). It begins tomorrow, which means these members of the crew are going into sequestration soon.
  • The televised portion of the trial begins the following morning with Eddy watching it in the media room. He is disgusted at how the defense attorney twists the truth about the crew and some of their actions in the recent past (much of which he should not have any knowledge about!) His ire draws the attention of a reporter who interviews him about this; unluckily for Eddy, the interview is selectively edited so it looks very bad for the crew…
  • The presiding judge – a kel ten zon or ‘master of the way’ Maarist priest – oversees the first day of trial before adjourning for the evening. He then retreats to his judicial quarters where he removes his many-faced mask revealing … Breyon Sodhii.

  • GM Notes:

    • Everybody (except Mel who, as stated, is taking a hiatus for a bit) was available. Woot.
    • This session actually worked out better than I was expecting. We dealt with a bunch of ship stuff during the transit – I implemented Spaceships Malfunctions from Pyramid 3-103 and it worked great – then moved on to the Sam stuff before finally beginning the trial a bit earlier than expected.
    • I’d originally intended for this to be a trial with three arbiting judges, but changed my mind at the last minute. Plus, I just really liked the look of the Voice of Rao from the SyFy show “Krypton.” Plus, GURPS Traveller: Humaniti has a nice little reference to this religion that I sort of retrofitted. And the reveal that the presiding judge was Breyon Sodhii … well, that was intended on happening much later (and probably still will) but revealing this to the Players (but no the characters) was a great way to end the session.

The Count’s Gambit, Part Seven

  • On Quopist, the crew get the captured vargr corsair up and running. Taking it into orbit, they, along with Lord Mika Anjiliac, they undergo an extensive decontamination process to ensure they aren’t carriers.
  • Following decon, the crew undergo equally lengthy debriefings with CDR Angela Krin, the commander of the Resolute. Haank, being an old flame of hers, later spends a little time catching up.
  • With the Miss Adventure repaired, the crew depart Quopist and head on to Porozlo. During the trip, they get to know Lord Mika better and find him a friendly, gregarious sort of fellow.
  • Upon arrival at Porozlo, the crew are directed to land directly at Anjiliac City where they are met by Count Para himself who is extremely pleased at the return of his son. The crew are paid and invited to attend a fete that evening to celebrate Mika’s return.
  • Among Count Para’s retinue is an old friend and ally of some of the crew, Corbin Spiirs. The crew are surprised to discover Spiirs is now a knight.
  • At the fete, the crew mix with the local nobles and business leaders. During this fete, they learn that the archduke has summoned all Spinward Marches nobles to Mora for the long-delayed Holiday List celebration. Lord Mika, knowing that the crew have to go to Mora themselves for the trial of Adric Mason, offers the Miss Adventure to take them there. Both he and Sir Corben will be aboard the Adventure

GM Notes:

  • CommJunkee was out for this session.
  • This entire session felt like a mess to me, but none of the players seemed to have problems with it. I knew from the beginning that this was basically going to be an “epilogue” rather than a full-on session.
  • This brings adventure three to a close.
  • Since we’re livestreaming our games every Saturdays (6:00PM Eastern) at Ronnke’s Twitch channel and then later uploading the stream on the YouTube channel, we’ve decided to dial back on the extensiveness of the recap to just the overall outline.

The Count’s Gambit, Part Six

  • On Quopist, the crew have located Lord Mika Anjiliac who reveals that he has been attempting to locate the source of the plague and believes he has found it with the crashed starship. While patrolling this area, Sae locates a strange purple dust that the crew suspect to be unrefined tempest.
  • At Haank’s request, a dropship from the Resolute to extract the crew and Lord Mika. From the dropship pilot, the crew learn that a massive riot has engulfed Tel Bollin which is monopolizing the majority of the Resolute’s resources. As a result, when the crew learn that another dropship has gone down while searching for the vargr corsair, they are the only personnel capable of responding in a timely manner. Lord Mika agrees that they should do this, even though it may put him in danger.
  • Long minutes later, as the dropship makes its approach toward the last reported location of their sister craft, they suddenly find themselves being jammed. Very soon after, there is a great explosion that the dropship crew realize means someone has scuttled the downed craft. Haank then makes a call: his team (minus Eddy who has a broken leg but plus the dropship medic) will continue on foot.
  • A kilometer or so away, the crew discover the vargr corsair. Utilizing stealth, they get into position where they can observe three members of the Dzarukh in sight, two of whom appear to be returning to the ship. At Haank’s instructions, he, Buck and Sae target these vargr … and just as they engage, they realize that a large number of Quopist locals are stealthing forward as well.
  • The three vargr are dropped by these shots just as the Quopist raiders charge, pausing long enough to take hits of tempest. This results in a fierce firefight between the crew and the raiders as both sides attempt to take the corsair.
  • And the crew wins.

GM Notes:

  • Mel has been talking about taking a hiatus for a while now so with Loki coming back to take over her character Armin again, she went ahead and started it early.
  • The firefight that dominated this session took a lot longer than I expected it to. And naturally, I realized I’d screwed up some of the revised tempest addict stuffs. I should have actually reviewed the stats before the session began.
  • I’m retrofitting the Star Wars d20 adventure module, “Tempest Feud” for this although I’m definitely making some tweaks and adjustments to fit better.
  • Since we’re livestreaming our games every Saturdays (6:00PM Eastern) at Ronnke’s Twitch channel and then later uploading the stream on the YouTube channel, we’ve decided to dial back on the extensiveness of the recap to just the overall outline..
