Wherein the Warband Slay More Yuan-Ti, Brumrumli nearly dies, and Some Fa’iel are Rescued…

  • With Brumrumli and Zistral covering a stairwell leading up, the rest of the warband spread out to clear out the rest of this level. Upon discovering a prison filled with Fa’iel, Thorn sets to unlocking their cells while Arn watches his back.
  • At the top of the stairs, yuan-ti send a barrel rolling down; it smashes against the wall at the bottom and explodes, leaving a swath of burning pitch to block off the stairs. Zistral is trapped on the other side of this mess and his terror of fire kicks him, forcing him to retreat. Brum and Lan-Fan also retreat, but do so toward the rest of the warband where they join up with Finn who is rushing to investigate the abrupt and unexpected explosion.
  • Another pair of yuan-ti appear from another stairwell that Thorn had discovered earlier during his recon and loose some poorly aimed arrows at Brum, Finn and Lan-Fan before quickly retreating. Brum and Finn opt to quickly pursue, hoping the catch them before they can reproduce the barrel trick, then Lan-Fan chooses to follow after a few moments.
  • Reaching the stairs, Brum charges up, surefooted and confident, leaving behind young Finn; the dwarf bounds onto the upper landing and, almost at once, finds himself in a hot fight. He prevents one yuan-ti from rolling another explosive barrel down the stairs that Finn is slowly ascending, then quickly finds himself blocking arrows; upon seeing the barrel and the lit fuse smoldering away, Finn pulls water out of the air and drenches the barrel, snuffing out the fuse.
  • The fierce fight on the landing quickly turns bloody. Lan-Fan springs up the stairs to join the melee and, upon seeing the number of the enemy, Finn uses the Horn of Defiant to alert the rest of the warband to their peril before surging up and lending his own minimal combat abilities. Brum, bloodied and with a shattered shield, clings to consciousness despite his grievous wounds, and continues to fight on.
  • Hearing the Horn, Zistral fights through his fear of fire and charges through the blaze to ascend the first set of stairs so as to hit the yuan-ti from behind. In moments, he too is hard-pressed and one of snake-men half-severs one of his legs. Thorn, abandoning his attempts to pick locks, and Arn charge forward and join the fight long moments later.
  • In the end, the yuan-ti fall, leaving behind a seriously battered warband. Luckily, Finn is able to heal the worst of their injuries, including Zistral’s near crippled leg.

Player Notes:

  • CommJunkee continued as GM for this adventure arc. Loki was out but Andricus played Lan-fan for the fight.
  • As with the previous one, the session was dominated by combat as we continued what amounted to a good old fashioned dungeon crawl. This was a brutal fight, with Brum coming very close to death, Zistral nearly losing a leg, and Lan-Fan also nearly going down.
  • From the rescued Fa’iel, the warband learned that the lead yuan-ti has absconded with Sheikh Al’Dafar ibn Al’Hadir and Zyanra, evidently intent on using them to fuel terrible blood rituals.
  • Since we’re livestreaming our games every Saturdays (6:00PM Eastern) at our Olympus Twitch channel and then later uploading the stream on the YouTube channel, we’ve decided to dial back on the extensiveness of the recap to just the overall outline. Evidently, I’ve been providing the wrong Twitch address on these although Ronnke’s page simulcast with ours so…

Wherein the Warband Slay Many Yuan-Ti…

  • With a loud, angry hiss, the yuan-ti anathema surges forward to attack. Arn unleashes a jet of flame against the creature as Brum and Zistral engage it with their weapons while Finn briefly blinds it with a magical flash before hurling an explosive lightning at a different yuan-ti. Against this onslaught, the anathema falls and Arn drops a force dome around the corpse, just in time to ensure the collapsing mass of serpents can’t escape; he then flame jets the lot of them.
  • At the same, Thorondil continues his pursuit of the escaping yuan-ti abomination, aided by the approaching Lan-Fan who is returning from informing the Fa’iel about the ziggurat temple. The two rejoin the warband just in time to see the anathema be destroyed.
  • Up the stairs the warband go where they quickly encounter another group of yuan-ti warriors. A fierce fight ensues with the band splitting into two groups to act against individual threats but the end result is the same: the enemy fall before the warband.
  • In the distance, the alert gong continues to ring…

Wherein the Warband Enter the Yuan-Ti Temple and Blood is Shed…

  • Deep within Yaqut min Alraml, the warband has discovered a ziggurat temple occupied by yuan-ti. Recognizing that the rest of the Fa’iel need to know of this danger, Finn Sardock sends Lan-Fan back to the camp to inform Rashid of their location and intention.
  • After she heads out, the rest turn to seeking entrance to the ziggurat and quickly locate a secret door that they use to sneak in.
  • A quick skirmish with a handful of yuan-ti ends with the warband split into two distinct groups. One of those groups – Brumrumli and Zistral – encounter a pair of extraordinarily beautiful and very charming women who attempt to convince them to remain behind; fortunately, their duty propels them onward, though they both promise to return quickly.
  • The warband continues forward, eventually reaching a throne room of sorts which contains more yuan-ti, including a champion of sorts who attempts to draw them into an ambush. Opting to spring this ambush entirely, the warband attacks, with Thorn startling the champion by darting around him and hamstringing him while his companions cut through the other yuan-ti with relative ease. Bellowing his fury, the champion smashes some sort of vial at his side which causes an acidic cloud to envelop him.
  • As the acid cloud grows, Arn drops a weather dome over it in an attempt to prevent it from extending and then, as the last of the other yuan-ti fall, the warband can hide ominous hissing from within the dome.
  • And then, the warband discover that the yuan-ti champion has transformed into an even greater beast that surges forward to attack!

Wherein the Lost City is Explored … and Hidden Dangers are Revealed

  • At the gates of Yaqut min Alraml, Finn Sardock sends Lan-Fan and Thorn into the city to find a high spot to recon while he and the rest of the warband escort the Fa’iel to some buildings to set up camp. The scouts are instructed to seek out a specific temple.
  • After, the warband ventures deeper into the city, intent on that temple, but deviate to investigate a dry public bath with many bodies. As night is falling, they return to the Fa’iel, intent on heading out on the morrow.
  • Both Arn and Finn suffer serious nightmares that night, and their troubled sleep is disturbed by cries of people who have discovered their kinsmen have vanished. Among those who have disappeared are the sheikh himself and Zyanra, Thorn’s new … friend.
  • With Zistral tracking, the warband follows the trail of some very large snake-like creatures which many of them suspect to be yuan-ti. This trail leads them into a prepared ambush with three of the beasts, but the warband expertly win through … although Master Brumrumli is more than a little irritated at Zistral for killing the one the dwarf hoped to capture and interrogate.
  • The trail finally leads to a great ziggurat upon which Lan-Fan and Thorn (who are ranging atop buildings on either side of the warband that is on the street) witness the sacrifice of a Fa’iel by a yuan-ti female that Lan-Fan recognizes from Kelmarane…

Dramatis Personæ

Wherein Finn Violates the Laws of Magick, the Warband and the Fa’iel find the Lost City, and Blood is Shed…

  • As a storm wails around the Gate from which armed centaurs are emerging, Finn decides to take quick action. Ordering Brum to array the warriors for a hit-and-run delaying action, he begins weaving magick, intending on pulling lightning down from the sky to disrupt the Gate.
  • It works … mostly. The lightning explodes against the Gate, causing it first to erupt violently against the forces of the djinn, but then something unexpected happens: later, Finn will be able to deduce that the unexpected surge of power slamming into the Gate effectively untethered it from the the origin point. At that moment, though, he is too intent on trying to keep from being torn apart by the raw magick surging through him.
  • After a brief moment of consideration, he bends his will toward finding a new anchor point, opting for trying to seek out the lost city. This too works, much to his surprise, and he is able to create a new Gate, now between the warband and the fleeing Fa’iel, who quickly reorient toward this avenue of escape.
  • Once the last of the Fa’iel are through and the warband also, Finn backs through the Gate, straining to keep from being turned to ash by the sheer amount of power he’s weaving with. As the Gate closes, a pair of hostile armored centaurs dragging chariots with a human archer within dart through, intent on taking out the warband; at the same time, another pair of female centaurs attempt the same, but only one of them makes it through. The collapse of the Gate kills one of the females, which causes immense agony to the other (who is mysteriously connected to her elder by a leash of some sort.)
  • A violent melee ensues, during which Zistral is temporarily lamed by well-placed arrows (though he certainly retaliates in a far more lethal manner against the archers in question.) One of the warrior centaurs is finally brutally slain when he ends up surrounded, and the other is intimidated into yielding by Brum.
  • After securing the prisoners and handling the wounds, the warband rejoin the Fa’iel who are waiting at the great door leading into the city. Because he led them here, Finn learns, they wait for him to be the person to push the doors open. He does so … and they enter the fabled Yaqut min Alraml

Player Notes:

  • CommJunkee continued as GM for this adventure arc. Due to computer woes, Loki was unavailable, though she was there initially. For that matter, she wasn’t the only one who had trouble – I (Rigil) had to rush out to Best Buy immediately before the game to get a new headset for the game, CJ evidently had TeamSpeak issues while I was out, and Andricus’ internet connection kept dropping.
  • As Finn’s player, I’m a tiny bit uncomfortable with how this session sort of became the Finn Show. Planning on offering some suggestions to the GM for next week to make up for it.

Dramatis Personæ
  • GM: Gigermann
  • Roland Ritter (Rigil Kent)
  • Knight City Cops (Andricus, Herodian, and Ronnke)

Issue 0 (Cont’d): Stripclub Shootout

  • Some days after his fight in the garage, Roland finds at the hospital to take his “shift” in watching over his brother, Ray, who is still in a coma. As he enters, he discovers that one of his older brothers, Robbie, is already here. Robbie is a detective in Gang Crimes but at the moment is more interested in blaming Roland for their brother’s current condition. An argument ensues that must be broken up by an orderly. Robbie storms out.
  • Roland later learns that Mohinder was shot in a drive-by that sounds like retaliation for the events that the Black Knight was responsible for. Even worse, he learns most of the criminals apprehended by the vigilante have been released. He questions the man but does not learn much new, then chats with the local police who are assigned to protect some of more badly injured criminals. This points him to an identity of the criminals – Latvian gangsters led by a man named Oli.
  • Hitting the streets, Roland asks around and finally ends up identifying the Latvian HQ in the form of a strip club. He scouts it out in civilian form, intending on breaking in much later that night to get incriminating evidence. While scouting late in the night, he observes first a squad of heavily armed men arriving via the back door soon before a group of cops arrive at the front. Recognizing his brother, Robbie, with the cops, Roland tries to call him to warn him of the danger … but the detective has clearly left his phone in his car or turned it off entirely. The cops enter … and almost immediately find themselves under attack by heavily armed gangsters with submachine guns.
  • Even before the cops have breached, Roland is sprinting toward the back-door, extremely glad that he is at least wearing black motorcycle leathers and a helmet. He kicks in the door at the sound of gunfire, then pauses briefly to hurl a bucket of mop water against the circuit breaker panel, causing a power shortage. As lights start flickering, he enters the stripclub, just as the police pull back, half of their number badly injured.
  • Using the darkness and speed as cover, the Black Knight smashes through the gangsters. Outside, Robbie and the cops still conscious suddenly hear the sound of screaming accompanying more gunfire that isn’t aimed at them. As the shooting begins to die down, Robbie leads the cops into the club – they end up dropping a fleeing (but armed) bad guy and, a moment later, catch sight of the Black Knight at the top of a set of stairs immediately before he vanishes through a door.
  • Charging through a different door, Roland finds a trio of villains, including Oli, lurking in the darkness and waiting…

Player Notes:

  • CommJunkee was out again, so Gigermann stepped in for a one-shot for his planned Supers game.
  • The actual fight sadly degenerated into just me (Rigil) and the GM (Giger) playing against one another since the cops took casualties and wisely pulled back. We agreed, after the fact, that the GM should have given some of the bad guys to the other players…
  • Since we’re livestreaming our games every Saturdays (6:00PM Eastern) at our Olympus Twitch channel and then later uploading the stream on the YouTube channel, we’ve decided to dial back on the extensiveness of the recap to just the overall outline. Dramatis Personæ

Wherein the Warband Escapes Kelmarane Intact, Reaches the Sietch, and Finds Tragedy…

  • Through a combination of skill and luck, the warband’s plan to rescue their captured friends and allies as well as freeing captured slaves succeeds. They leave Kelmarane behind and in sheer chaos.
  • Zyanra, the catgirl that Thorn defeated, follows him almost too eagerly, much to his consternation and Finn’s amusement.
  • After getting the rescued slaves to a rendezvous point with Proximo, the caravan-master who has agreed to escort those freed from their bondage to Castle Defiant, the warband returns to Sietch Altayih, but discover it in ruins. They search for survivors but find none though Zistral does locate some tracks. When asked about any potential boltholes in the direction these tracks run, Aslam knows of one and the warband decide to follow.
  • As they depart Sietch Altayih, Finn gets the feeling that they are being watched but no one else among them seems to notice so he chalks this up to mild paranoia.
  • Rather than proceeding directly to the bolthole, the warband take a wide, circuitous route in an attempt to shake off any potential pursuit. When they reach the new camp, they learn from the survivors – Sheikh Al’Dafar, his son Rashid, his daughter (and Finn’s psuedo-betrothed) Ammerah, and Janek Kaalem – that the djinn they are fleeing from found their sietch and attacked. Many of the Fa’iel’s best warriors were lost in the defense…
  • Upon learning about Finn’s suspicions regarding being observed, Sheikh Al’Dafar orders the camp to be struck so they can set out the following morning. He is greatly concerned that the djinn’s scouts are trying to find them.
  • That evening, Zyanra pursues Thorn to a high point and then claims him.
  • The following morning, as a storm approaches and the surviving Fa’iel prepare to set out, a massive Gate opens in the near distance, vomiting forth armed centaurs. The djinn has found them.

Player Notes:

  • CommJunkee continued as GM for this adventure arc. Due to other obligations, Loki was unavailable once more.
  • We basically did a sort of “skill challenge” in the first part of the session and made some stuff up along the way. It worked okay but still requires some further hammering out.
  • Since we’re livestreaming our games every Saturdays (6:00PM Eastern) at our Olympus Twitch channel and then later uploading the stream on the YouTube channel, we’ve decided to dial back on the extensiveness of the recap to just the overall outline. Dramatis Personæ

Wherein A Plan is Put Into Action, Thorondil Gains a … Friend, and Zistral Proves His Puissance…

  • During the day, three major bouts in the Battle Market take place. The first involves an Araterre fencing master named Aramis versus a snake-man who dared insult the art of fencing. This is a surprisingly short bout, with Aramis blinding the creature with a surprise lunge and dropping it.
  • A second fight takes place between Thorondil and a slave gladiator cat-woman wielding a spear. Unlike the previous one, though, this fight is far more exciting, especially with the woman’s aggression. Unfortunately for her, Thorn is the superior combatant and she soon collapses, unconscious. Her master, the repellent Farouq ibn Saïd, promptly casts her aside, which results in her being thrown into Thorn’s cell.
  • Finally, Zistral finds himself facing off against the minotaur who is seeking revenge against the centaur for the death of the manticore earlier. They clash … and Zistral proves himself to be much greater in battle. Bleeding profusely from multiple injuries, the minotaur is incapable of catching up with Zistral, who keeps dancing back out of range. Furious at this, the overseer of this camp, Kardswann, orders his mage to take action. A spell of berserk is cast at the two, though Zistral manages to resist the urge to fly into madness. The minotaur … does not.
  • With a roar, the minotaur lunges forward, misses Zistral who expertly dodges aside, and plunges into the crowd where he begins killing indiscriminately. And then, an explosion of fire erupts from a barrel of lantern oil. Suddenly, chaos erupts.
  • We dial back to earlier, as the rest of the warband having snuck into Kelmarane as they spread out throughout the ruined town to set plans into motion. Finn’s efforts draws the notice of two secretive individuals – Aguilar and Maria – and the three converse, quickly determining that their respective objectives coincide; when he learns they are members of an anti-slavery organization, he offhandedly mentions introducing them to Thorondil when he is rescued, the two react strangely and discuss in Elvish which Finn can barely follow. What he gleans, though, adds to his suspicions about Thorn’s parentage, but he says nothing and the two agree to aid in their efforts. Meanwhile, Brumrumli engages some dwarves in conversation, quickly determining that one of them is also an agent of the Seven Brother Kings of Zarak. The two converse which leads to Brum’s new contact to agree to assist in the coming action. Why, he might even be able to relocate some barrels of lantern oil! At the same time, Aslam manages to get into the battle market while using the press of people as concealment so as to sneak weapons and tools (such as lockpicks) to the captured Fa’iel and Thorn. And finally, Arn manages to meet up with Aramis and the two reach an accord as well with regards to the latter helping smuggle out any freed slaves.
  • The plan is set …

Player Notes:

    • CommJunkee continued as GM for this adventure arc. Due to other obligations, Loki was unavailable once more.
    • The Aramis character referenced is a potential replacement for Arn by Andricus who created him because he wanted to experiment with fencing and double weapons. We have a running joke about Arn turning evil in this game … so maybe Andricus knows something the rest of us don’t?
    • Since we’re livestreaming our games every Saturdays (6:00PM Eastern) at our Olympus Twitch channel and then later uploading the stream on the YouTube channel, we’ve decided to dial back on the extensiveness of the recap to just the overall outline. Dramatis Personæ
  • GM: Gigermann
  • Roland Ritter (Rigil Kent)
  • Latvian Punks (Andricus, Herodian, and Ronnke)

Issue 0: Latvian Losers

  • While on his way back from the hospital where he was visiting his brother, Roland Ritter stops at a local Quicky-Mart. While he’s in the beer cooler, a quartet of thugs enter and begin attempting to extort the shop-owner and his sister. Roland exits the cooler and promptly engages the Latvian criminals, dropping three of thee of them in a matter of seconds. The fourth flees.
  • After getting a promise from the storeowner to not identify him, Roland leaves and uses obtained intel to eventually identify the hideout of these Latvian criminals: a nearby garage that doubles as a chop-shop. He surveils the area, dons his scavenged ‘Black Knight’ gear, and makes a stealth entrance.
  • Killing the lights, he races forward to engage the criminals which not only catches them by complete surprise but causes them to freeze. In a matter of seconds, Roland has taken down nearly all of the criminals – if they are not unconscious, they are prone, shrieking in pain over their suddenly broken legs thanks to his use of a tonfa. One of the gangsters even manages to knock himself out in the darkness and a second successfully escapes after grabbing a bunch of money from the safe. A third manages to call their boss but the ‘Black Knight’ knocks him out and then warns the recipient of the call that he is ‘watching.’ Their operation ends now.
  • Using the phone in the garage office, Roland calls 911 and declares that someone is shooting … before discharging a pistol three or four times near the receiver. With valuable intel and a bunch of Latvian thugs incapacitated for a while, he withdraws and watches from the shadows when the police arrive.
  • It’s a good start.

Player Notes:

  • CommJunkee was out, so Gigermann stepped in for a one-shot for his planned Supers game. This was more of a test that basically amounted to a proof of concept. Only I (Rigil) played an actual PC, with everyone else trying to kill/beat him up with some NPCs.
  • The second fight turned into a mook horror show. My 500 point “super soldier” caught them completely by surprise and due to the roll, they were frozen for a full 6 seconds. Given Roland’s speed – 10! – I was able to use Heroic Charge to get in an drop hostiles with a tonfa to the leg.
  • Also, Fantasy Grounds was insane with the rolls all throughout again. Herodian kept rolling (again) Critical Failures and I (Rigil) kept rolling margin critical successes … even though it was mostly unnecessary since the bad guys (in the second fight) were mostly frozen.

Dramatis Personæ

Wherein Aslam Gets Into a Fight and the Free Members of the Warband Put Into Action a Plan…

  • Days pass as the freed members of the warband plan and prepare. Per Aslam, Kelmarane is soon to become filled with slavers here for the ‘Games’ which the warband intend to use as cover for their insertion. Finn uses his magicks to reach out to his captured comrades to let them know that the others are coming for them.
  • While scouting and patrolling, Aslam al-Khalaf encounters a band of slavers who have stopped for the night before pressing on to enter Kelmarane in the dark. Seeing an opportunity, the overconfident Aslam sneaks forward and begins assassinating the slavers one by one.
  • Unfortunately for him, after he’s taken out the second one, the remaining three catch sight of him, forcing him to retreat; he circles around while in the dark, keeping an eye on them, then advances forward again when he observes the three beginning to nod off once more following their adrenaline crash. Two are neutralized relatively easily, but the third proves to be a bit more of a threat. Eventually, however, Aslam manages to take him out before freeing the slaves.
  • Inside the battle market of the village, Zistral wakes to find his wounds healed; he is in a cell and is threatened by the minotaur who is quite furious at the fate of his manticore. From his cell, Thorn is dragged out to a room where he is observed by a grotesquely obese man attended by several attractive women, one of whom touches the half-elf and declares to her master that Thorn will do marvelously. And finally, in yet another cell, Lan-Fan is visited by a strangely beautiful woman who has hints of greenish scales upon her skin; this woman declares that she looks forward to breaking Lan-Fan…
  • With the clothes and identities of the now dead slavers, the rest of the warband enters Kelmarane…

Player Notes:

  • CommJunkee continued as GM for this adventure arc.
  • We got a really late start for this one though it was expected due to the GM having prepared us for it. As a result, what should have been a footnote sequence – Aslam takes out the slavers – turned into basically the entire session, especially when the GM mandated a couple of rolls that, inevitably, screwed everything up.
  • Also, Fantasy Grounds was insane with the rolls. During the course of this fight, I counted nine critical results (success or fails), including the very last roll. It was bugnuts crazy.
  • Since we’re livestreaming our games every Saturdays (6:00PM Eastern) at our Olympus Twitch channel and then later uploading the stream on the YouTube channel, we’ve decided to dial back on the extensiveness of the recap to just the overall outline.
